A mother holding baby on a gravel road at dusk, with the shadow of the father looming behind—tension of co-parenting & abuse

I never knew love and hate
Could be born in the same breath,
Until I shared a life
With the one who wounds me.

We loved deep,
The season passed
Me carrying
was the demise.

In your mistreatment,
I crumble, aching for respect;
But in our baby’s smile,
I find a love so vast,
It defies the weight of sorrow.

You are both the storm,
And the vessel in which
Our greatest treasure rests.

Our connection is bound by DNA strands
A life we share, a baby tie
A bond woven through time
Forever to stay.

Though you may break me,
I’ll gather my pieces
My strength is found in her
And ensure she only feels whole.

Her tiny hands are my reason,
I gaze into her starry eyes
A promise—
That her world will be
Softer than ours.
